Planning Your FTCE Test Registration

When you register for the FTCE, it is important that you choose the testing scenario that will work best for you.

For both the FTCE General Knowledge Test and the FTCE Elementary Education Test, you do not need to attempt all subtests in one sitting: you can take each subtest separately, can take two at a time, or any other combination you like. Each appointment requires a separate registration however.

The FTCE General Knowledge Test (082) requires you to complete an essay, as well as demonstrate your knowledge of English Language Skills (ELS), Reading, and Mathematics content. The ELS and Reading subtests each consist of 30 multiple choice questions, while the Mathematics subtest has 35 questions. You receive 50 minutes for the Essay subtest, 40 minutes for ELS, 55 minutes for Reading, and 1 hour and 40 minutes for Mathematics. If you take all four subtests in a single session, you receive a 15-minute break.

The FTCE Elementary Education K-6 Test (060) is comprised of four subtests: Language Arts and Reading (Subtest 1), Social Science (Subtest 2), Science (Subtest 3), and Mathematics (Subtest 4). Subtest 1 has 50 multiple choice questions, Subtests 2 and 3 have 45 questions each, and Subtest 4 has 35 questions. You are given between 1 hour 5 minutes and 1 hour 10 minutes to complete each subtest, and if you take three or more subtests in a single session, you receive a 15-minute break.

When deciding how many tests to register for in one sitting, consider how much preparation you need for each subtest. If you have a lot of content to cover in your study, you may find it more convenient to complete each subtest separately so you can focus on one subject area at a time. The shorter testing times may also be helpful if you struggle with concentration or find exams tiring. However, if you need to have your results by a particular date, want to avoid the hassle of multiple appointments, or just want to get the FTCE out of the way, you may prefer to save time by doing multiple subtests in one sitting.

Before you register for your exam, read our free FTCE Study Guide to learn more about the content of each subtest. Also take a full-length FTCE Practice Test to see how much preparation you need in the different areas. If you're considering doing multiple subtests at once, we suggest completing the appropriate practice tests in succession, under exam conditions, to get a better idea of what your test day experience will be like. This will help you decide which testing scenario will let you achieve your best result.
